Alterations 101 for Off-the-Rack Wedding Dresses: Making It Perfectly You
So, you’ve found the dress of your dreams in our off-the-rack boutique—congratulations! While it’s already beautiful, there might be a few tweaks needed to make it perfectly made for you. Alterations can transform an already stunning dress into one that feels custom-made for you. Here’s a quick guide that will help you help us to create YOUR dress.
1. Start with the Right Size
First things first—when choosing your off-the-rack dress, it’s important to focus on fit. While it’s tempting to buy a dress totally the wrong size, it’s always best to choose a size that fits your current measurements. Dresses can be easily taken in, but letting them out is a bit trickier and may be limited by the available fabric. We like to never go smaller than 1 size, and never bigger than 2.
2. Common Alterations and Adjustments
Every bride is unique, and so is every wedding dress. Here are some common alterations that nearly every nearlywed can expect:
-
Hemming the Length: Adjusting the length is one of the most common alterations. Your dress should just skim the floor to prevent falling over, but still give a moment for the shoes (or lack of).
-
Taking In or Letting Out: If the dress feels a little snug or loose in certain areas, our skilled seamstresses can take in or let out the seams to ensure a perfect fit.
-
Adjusting the Straps: Straps that are too loose or too tight can be a quick fix. Adjusting them not only make her more comfy, but will keep the dress perfectly in place.
-
Adding a Bustle: If your dress has a train, a bustle can be added to lift it off the ground after the ceremony, making it easier to slay all night without tripping over the fabric.
3. Personalizing Your Dress
One of the best parts about alterations is the ability to add personal touches that reflect YOU:
-
Custom Embellishments: Adding lace, beading, or embroidery can take a simple dress into something truly special. Think about adding elements that match your wedding theme or have personal meaning.
-
Changing the Neckline: If you love the dress but wish it had a different neckline, we can fix that (almost all the time!). Whether you want to go strapless, add a sweetheart neckline, or raise a plunging V, the possibilities are endless.
-
Adding Sleeves or a Jacket: Want a bit more coverage or a different look for the ceremony and reception? Adding sleeves, straps, or a detachable jacket can give you the flexibility to change up your look throughout the day.
4. Timing Is Everything
When it comes to wedding dress alterations, timing is key. Schedule your first fitting at least 3 months before your wedding date. This allows plenty of time for adjustments without feeling rushed. Depending on the complexity of the alterations, you may need two or three fittings, so be sure to plan accordingly.
5. Budgeting for Alterations
It’s important to factor alterations into your overall dress budget. While off-the-rack dresses are typically more affordable than custom-made gowns, alterations can add to the final cost.
