Where to Donate Your Wedding Dress in Ottawa
So, the wedding is over, the thank-you cards are (maybe? hopefully?) sent, and your wedding dress is currently living in the back of your closet .Maybe it's still in its garment bag. Maybe it's been sitting there for five years. Maybe you moved it to your parents' house because you simply ran out of room. Girl, there is absolutely no judgement here.
As an Ottawa bridal boutique specializing in off-the-rack wedding dresses, we spend a LOT of time talking about what happens before the wedding. Finding the dress, getting it altered, picking the accessories, and making sure everything is perfect for the big day, but we spend just as much time talking about what happens afterwards! For something that takes up so much space in our hearts (and our closets), it's funny how little we talk about what happens to a wedding dress once the wedding is over.
Our bridal boutique specializes in offering off-the-rack wedding dress samples that have been discontinued. We are all about taking a sustainable approach to weddings and that mission doesn’t stop when you say “I do”.
Never Knew I Needed
Wedding Dresses Accepted: Donated Vintage Gowns (30+ years old), Donated Professional Cleaned Worn Gowns( under 3 years since purchase), Consignment for Brand New Wedding Gowns

And yes, we're starting with ourselves woops!
At Never Knew I Needed (or NKIN, as our friends call us) we have a huge focus on inclusivity and sustainability. Our entire boutique was built around the idea that wedding dress shopping doesn't need to follow the traditional rules. We're big fans of giving gowns a second chance and making wedding dress shopping more accessible!
Fun fact: NKIN actually started our wedding dress shop journey by selling wedding dress by consignment business back in 2022!! Our whole idea was to give wedding dresses a second chance while making bridal shopping a little more affordable and a lot less intimidating.
Fast forward a few years, and we've evolved into one of Ottawa's largest off-the-rack bridal boutiques. These days, we primarily sell designer sample gowns, meaning brides can shop for beautiful wedding dresses at a fraction of their original retail price and take them home the very same day.
Vintage Wedding Dress Donations
If your wedding dress is 30 years old or older, PLEASE!! Donatings of vintage wedding gowns in Ottawa are one of our favourite knocks on our pink door!
Yes, that includes your mum's wedding dress from the '90s, your grandmother's lace gown from the '70s, or that incredible puff-sleeved creation you've been keeping in storage. And before anyone asks, YES, the '90s are officially considered vintage. Don’t get mad at us, we are just the messengers. We're processing that information right alongside you.
You might be surprised by just how many brides are looking for something with a little more personality and history opposed to traditional trendy gowns you find in every boutique. We're particularly interested in older wedding gowns that have been sitting in closets waiting for their next chapter.
And let's just say we might have some ideas brewing for these beautiful vintage pieces. We're not spilling all the details just yet, but if you're someone who loves vintage bridal fashion, you may want to keep an eye on NKIN.
Before bringing your gown to the boutique, reach out to our team with a few photos and whatever details you know about the dress. If you know the designer, approximate age, size, or whether the gown has been altered, that's wonderful. If all you know is that your mum wore it in 1987, that's okay too!
We really want to know the story behind the gown, it’s as important to us as the finer finishing details!

Newer Wedding Dress Donations
We also accept wedding dresses as as-is donations if your dress has been purchased in the last 3 years.
An as-is donation means you're gifting the gown in its current condition rather than expecting to receive money for it.NKIN wants to give your dress a new life, but due to our shop's restraints (hello fire marshall, yes I know you can’t walk in here but have you seen all the gowns??) we have to limit the amount of gowns brought, hence the three year and under rule.
We know what happens to wedding dresses on wedding days. They've been dragged across lawns, stepped on during first dances, and occasionally introduced to an entire glass of red wine (seriously, no judgement). If you are considering donating your wedding dress, please have it professionally cleaned prior to donating.

Wedding Dress Consignment in Ottawa
Wedding Dress Consignment in Ottawa
Here's where we have to make an important distinction.
We only consider wedding dresses for consignment if they are brand new, never worn, and never altered. That means if you wore your dress on your wedding day, even if it looks absolutely perfect, it isn't eligible for our consignment program.
The same applies if you've had alterations completed, even if you never ended up wearing the dress. If your gown is brand new, never worn, and never altered, feel free to contact us about potential consignment.

The Bride's Project
Donations Accepted: Worn Gowns (under three years since purchase)

If your wedding dress is relatively new, one of our favourite non-for-profit organizations to recommend is The Brides' Project.
Based in Toronto, The Brides' Project is a wonderful organization that gives donated wedding dresses a second life while supporting cancer charities. And yes, you can donate your wedding dress from Ottawa!
The Brides' Project offers a more affordable and sustainable wedding dress shopping experience by accepting donated gowns and selling them to future brides. The profits from their bridal shop go toward cancer-related charitable causes.
One thing we particularly love is that The Brides' Project welcomes personal notes from donors! How freaking sweet is that? Imagine finding your wedding dress and discovering a little message from the person who wore it before you.Maybe it includes a photo, a favourite wedding memory, or simply a few words wishing you the happiest day. It's such a small gesture, but what a beautiful way to connect two people who may never meet.
How to donate
Donating your wedding dress is pretty simple, and you don't even have to make the trip to Toronto!
- Fill out their donation form: Head to The Brides' Project website and complete their gown donation form.
- Ship your dress: Carefully package your gown and ship it to The Brides' Project in Toronto using the instructions on their website.
- Or donate locally in Ottawa: Don't feel like paying for shipping? Email thebrideprojectottawa@gmail.com to inquire about arranging a local drop-off.
Just make sure your gown meets their current donation requirements before sending it off!
Fairy God Mother Ottawa
Donations Accepted: Used Formal Accessories, Used Formal Shoes, and Prom Dresses

Now, hear us out.Just because you wore something as a wedding dress doesn't mean it has to be a wedding dress forever. What if your gown could become someone's prom dress? Not every wedding gown is a giant ballgown with a cathedral train. We've seen brides get married in slip dresses, colourful gowns, simple satin A-lines, short dresses, sparkly numbers, and everything in between. And some of those dresses could absolutely have a second life at prom.
Fairy Godmother of Ottawa is a local non-profit organization that collects formal dresses and accessories for Ottawa-area high school students who otherwise may not be able to afford prom attire.
Through their pop-up prom shop, students can choose an outfit for their special night, free of charge. Our owner Abby volunteers at the pop up shop and she tells us all about it. She says it is SO much fun to watch these girls light up and get ready for one of the most special nights of their lives. We LOVE an organization that helps people feel incredible in beautiful clothing without the financial pressure.
But we're going to be realistic here. If your dress has a 10-foot train, a heavily structured bridal bodice, and approximately 47 layers of crinoline, it's probably not the ideal prom donation.
Fairy Godmother focuses on current-style formalwear in new or almost-new condition, so contact the organization if you're unsure whether your gown would be suitable.
Fairy Godmother Ottawa also accepts accessories!Even if your wedding dress isn't suitable for prom, you might have other items sitting in your bridal accessories box that could be perfect.
Fairy Godmother accepts donations of formalwear accessories, including:
- Formal shoes
- Evening purses and clutches
- Jewelry
- Other suitable formal accessories
- Unopened cosmetics and hosiery
You'll want to check their website for current drop-off information and donation requirements before heading out.

And if you're donating a wedding dress rather than a traditional prom dress, we recommend reaching out first to confirm it's something they can use!
Because the goal isn't just to get your dress out of your closet. It's to make sure it actually has an opportunity to be worn and loved again.

Angel Gowns
Okay, this next one is a little different, and we're going to warn you that it's an emotional one.Not every donated wedding dress needs to become another wedding dress.Sometimes, the fabric itself can be used to create something incredibly special.
A CTV News story from Northern Ontario highlighted a retired palliative care nurse who transforms donated wedding gowns into tiny garments for families experiencing infant loss.
These garments are often called angel gowns.Angel gowns are specially made outfits that can be used by families saying goodbye to a baby who has passed away. It's a heartbreaking circumstance, but these handmade garments offer families something created with an extraordinary amount of care and compassion.
Wedding gowns are often made with beautiful fabrics that lend themselves to delicate sewing projects.
Satin, lace, tulle, soft linings, embroidery, and other bridal details can sometimes be repurposed into tiny gowns and keepsakes.Rather than being worn by another bride, the original wedding dress is carefully taken apart and transformed. One gown may provide enough usable fabric for multiple garments, depending on its construction and condition.
It's a very different second chapter for a wedding dress, but an important one.
How to donate your wedding dress for angel gowns in Ontario
If this is something that speaks to you, we recommend starting with the woman featured in the CTV News article.
You can read her story here:

Before sending your wedding dress, make sure to confirm whether she is currently accepting donations and how she prefers to receive them.Small volunteer-led sewing initiatives can have limited storage, time, and capacity, so it's important not to ship a gown without making arrangements first. If she isn't accepting donations, you can also look for other angel gown sewing initiatives in Ontario.
Alternative Ideas of What to do with Your Wedding Dress after the Wedding
Not ready to let go of your dress? That’s ABSOLUTELY okay! You don't have to decide what happens to your wedding dress immediately after your wedding.
Seriously. It’s ok you're feeling sentimental. Maybe you love the idea of donating it, but you're not quite ready to let go. Maybe you thought you'd want to sell it, but every time you look at it, you remember how incredible you felt wearing it.
That's okay! We talk a lot about saying yes to the dress, but we think what happens after the vows deserves just as much attention.
At NKIN, we offer wedding dress cleaning and preservation services for brides who want to give their gowns a little post-wedding TLC.

Transform your wedding dress into forever gifts
If you love your gown but can't imagine storing the entire thing, there's also the possibility of repurposing it. Wedding dresses contain some pretty incredible materials, and sometimes those fabrics can become something entirely different. That is why we created “After the Vows”. Each piece in this collection was designed to help you treasure your wedding day in tangible artfully made pieces in ways that will last a lifetime.
Not quite ready to cut up your entire wedding dress? We get it! The good news is that you don't have to. Some of our favourite After the Vows keepsakes use just a tiny piece of fabric, and some can even be made from the scraps your seamstress removed during alterations. A little something sentimental without having to say goodbye to the whole gown!

FAQS | Donating Wedding Dresses in Ottawa
Where can I donate my wedding dress in Ottawa?
You can contact Never Knew I Needed about vintage wedding dresses and as-is donations, or explore Fairy Godmother of Ottawa if your gown could work as formalwear. The Brides' Project also accepts eligible wedding dress donations from Ottawa, including by mail or through its listed local contact.
Can I donate a wedding dress that's 20 years old?
Yes, there may still be options for older wedding gowns, although not every organization accepts them. Some charities have age restrictions, while vintage bridal collections and fabric upcycling projects may be better suited to older dresses. NKIN is particularly interested in wedding dresses that are 30 years old or older.
Where can I donate my mother's wedding dress?

Yes, depending on the organization. Some donation programs accept altered wedding dresses, but it's important to disclose the changes. At NKIN, previously altered gowns aren't eligible for consignment, although they may be considered for as-is donation.
Can I donate a wedding dress that hasn't been cleaned?
Some organizations accept uncleaned wedding dresses, while others have stricter condition requirements. The Brides' Project, for example, says professional cleaning isn't required before donation. Always confirm the receiving organization's guidelines before sending your gown.

Whether you're looking to donate a vintage wedding dress in Ottawa, find a new home for your gown, or simply give it a little post-wedding TLC, we're always happy to help you figure out your next step.
